Efficiency, Consumption & Real-World Range
Fuel consumption varies widely across the range because engines include mild-hybrid petrols and diesels as well as the thirsty RS4, with approved combined figures from roughly 4.8 to 9.7 L/100 km depending on the engine. Entry diesel 30 TDI figures around 4.8–4.9 L/100 km translate into long real-world range, while mid-range petrols sit in the mid 6–7 L/100 km band. Performance-focused 45 TFSI returns near 7.3–7.5 L/100 km, and the RS4 is closer to 9.7 L/100 km, the latter being acceptable only for buyers prioritising performance over economy. These numbers mean a choice between outright efficiency for high-mileage users and spirited performance for those who value pace over frugality.
With a typical fuel tank of around 58 litres, expect theoretical ranges from roughly 600 km in the RS to well over 1,100 km with an efficient diesel — real-world figures will depend on load, motorway speed and driving style. MHEV systems are useful in urban stop-start traffic, trimming consumption and improving restart smoothness but they do not provide full electric driving. For those after maximum economy, the 30/35 diesels remain the sensible choice; petrols give smoother refinement and the 45 TFSI is the sweet spot for everyday performance. Hybrid or plug-in options are not part of the standard A4 Avant line-up, so electrified range is limited to mild-hybrid benefits.
