Price and efficiency are often the first things buyers look at. Here it becomes clear which model has the long-term edge – whether at the pump, the plug, or in purchase price.

Mercedes A Class is only slightly cheaper – starting at 32,600 £ , while the Nissan X-Trail costs 34,200 £ . That’s a price difference of around 1,589 £.

Fuel consumption also shows a difference: the Mercedes A Class uses 2.3 L/100km and is substantially more efficient than the Nissan X-Trail with 5.7 L/100km. The difference is about 3.4 L/100km.

I drive an Outback every day; I had an X‑Trail as a courtesy car while mine was in for service. First impression after a few kilometres of driving — the suspension is a disaster. You get the feeling this car picks up every single imperfection in the tarmac. Also, at idle the engine causes noticeably more vibrations in the cabin than the Subaru. It's an elegant and understated car. Excellent material finishes; its two screens are very convenient for driving.
