Costs and Efficiency:

Looking at overall running costs, both models reveal some interesting differences in everyday economy.

MG MGS5 EV is markedly cheaper – starting at 32,600 £ , while the Volvo EX40 costs 42,800 £ . That’s a price difference of around 10,286 £.

In terms of energy consumption, the MG MGS5 EV is only slightly more efficient: consuming 15.5 kWh/100km compared to 16.6 kWh/100km for the Volvo EX40. That’s a difference of about 1.1 kWh/100km.

As for electric range, the Volvo EX40 offers a bit more range – reaching up to 576 km, about 96 km more than the MG MGS5 EV.

MG Brand clearly not as it once was, Chinese owned swamping the SUV market with cheap affordable SUV's, but low reliability rating (2025)

We have recently moved from an ID3 to and MGS5. For me, the S5 feels a decent upgrade. The build quality really surprised me, especially in the cabin. the drive is also reassuringly solid, and in my opinion better than the ID3. the MGS5 is slightly quicker, but not too much that it is noticeable, and also more practical due to it's size.
Gone are my days of thinking MG was now just a cheap Chinese alternative. Go and test drive one, you'll see!
